The Saint-Louis Square is a very unique streetscape located in Montreal, with many people visiting during their trip due to its beautiful and peaceful nature. It’s definitely a must-see for anyone who loves a serene yet exciting street.
Psst! This article is a follow-up to our series of articles on different Montreal neighbourhoods, don’t miss the chance to discover ALL the wonders of this historic city:
History of the St-Louis SquareBefore the square we know today was created, this area was once home to the city’s water reservoir, which was opened in 1851. As the city was growing bigger, the reservoir became to small and was abandoned in 1869. Ten years later, after the place had been completely dried, the space was used to build houses and it became a prestigious Montreal neighbourhood. The Square Saint-Louis was named after two founding businessmen brothers, Emmanuel Saint-Louis and Jean-Baptiste Saint-Louis.
Unique FeaturesThis Montreal neighbourhood has been known as the closest thing to a European neighbourhood square you’ll find on this side of the Atlantic by Project for Public Spaces. That’s because of Victorian style houses that line the northern and southern sides of the St-Louis Square. These houses are unique, as many of them tower with brightly coloured trim, while others mimic more of a 17th century French castle, making this a very picturesque site.
Between the rows of houses lies a park with an elegant Victorian fountain and gazebo, where you can find many eccentric and unique characters from around the area.
What To DoThe park is considered a big feature in the St-Louis Square. During the week, it’s peaceful and often filled with business people enjoying a quick lunch break or mothers with their children taking a walk on a nice day. In the evenings and on weekends, the square comes to life, with the chance to encounter a concert happening, either planned or sometimes even impromptu.
